Fall 2025
By Randall Light, MD, and Tom Campbell
Don Carona, the Manager of the Texas A&M Physics Observatory, dedicated over three decades to the Physics Teaching Observatory at Texas A&M University, where he designed both the facilities and the programs. He also collaborated with college observatory programs at several universities across the United States. A passionate observer, he played a key role in the photometry of the bright star Betelgeuse. When he wasn't studying the stars, Don enjoyed programming.
Don passed away on September 8, 2025. He served as the host for the Brazos Valley Astronomy Club meetings in the observatory classroom. Don was consistently present for the meetings. He frequently offered information from his experience and extensive knowledge base. Members were also frequently given tours of the observatory and individual help. Sometimes he loaned the club equipment and was always helpful with its use. His software contributions will continue to provide a valuable resource to the club and the astronomy community. Don was warm and welcoming. He will be greatly missed by the Brazos Valley Astronomy Club.
When word went out that Don was in hospice care and his family wished to hear our memories, many of us paused to reflect on what he meant to us. What came back wasn’t a single story, but many — each one revealing a different side of Don. Together, these reflections form a fuller picture of who Don was to this club: a curator, a colleague, a teacher, and a friend. More than that, they show the lasting impact he had on each of us in our own way.
